More than a holiday … become a local in Argentina for a few days

Travel, as they say, broadens the mind. Increasingly we are being asked by our clients for recommendations of places to go and stay where they can be more than just spectators, where they can truly experience the culture and activities of the country as a local. Over the next few weeks, we will share with you a few of our favourite ideas. This week, become a local in Argentina.

Our first recommendation for those who enjoy the outdoor life is to become a gaucho for a few days, learning about their unique skills, Argentine cuisine and life on the Pampas of Argentina by staying on an estancia, an Argentinian estate. Estancia los Potreros is an authentic working 6,500-hectare cattle ranch in Córdoba’s Sierras Chicas. The estancia is family-run by our good friends Kevin and Louisa Begg.

During your stay they will introduce you to the history of this beautiful place. You will be encouraged to participate in the work of the gauchos – herding cattle and learning to lasso. You can also try your hand at polo.

Do not worry if you have never ridden before. I have never ridden before and Kevin promised me that I would be playing polo after three days! I have not taken him up on his offer yet, but he does assure me that they do cater for all levels of skill from zero to advanced. There are other outdoor activities to enjoy too, including walking and swimming. Or you can develop your knowledge of Argentinian cuisine on Chef’s Table evenings when guests learn local culinary skills such as making tasty empanadas.

A stay at Los Potreros will give you a real insight into life in this beautiful part of Argentina as a local and not a tourist.
