Milan is the second-largest city in Italy and the capital of the Lombardy region. It’s best known for fashion, design and business. Still, it has plenty of attractions for visitors interested in Italy’s historical past.

The city has a rich history. The Romans established a settlement here in the 4th century BC, and the Visigoths, the Lombards, and the Austrians later ruled the city. During the Renaissance, Milan became a cultural and economic centre, with figures such as Leonardo da Vinci and Francesco Sforza leaving their mark on the city.

Popular attractions include:

  • Milan Cathedral, a beautiful gothic cathedral that took over six centuries to build.
  • Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, one of the world’s oldest shopping malls.
  • Sforza Castle, an impressive fortress built in the 15th century, houses several museums, including the Museum of Ancient Art and the Museum of Musical Instruments.
  • Teatro alla Scala, a world-renowned opera house.
  • Brera Art Gallery, which houses a collection of Italian Renaissance art.

For those interested in fashion, Milan is home to numerous fashion boutiques and luxury shops on the famous Via Montenapoleone and Via della Spiga. The Navigli district is also a must-see, with its picturesque canals, charming boutiques, and trendy bars and restaurants.
